Stanford Pediatric Radiology 15-Month Fellowship Pathway

Pediatric Radiology 15-Month Pathway

Stanford Medicine offers the 15-month pathway leading to specialty certification in Diagnostic Radiology and subspecialty certification in Pediatric Radiology, as defined by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). This pathway allows Stanford University Diagnostic Radiology (DR) residents to complete pediatric radiology subspecialty training during residency in accordance with ABR requirements.

Completion of this pathway qualifies Stanford University trainees to apply for Pediatric Radiology subspecialty certification (often informally referred to as the Pediatric Radiology CAQ), assuming all other ABR requirements are met.

Who Can Apply:

  • Open to Stanford University Diagnostic Radiology residents
  • Stanford program expectation: Residents should declare their intent to pursue the pathway preferably at the beginning of the R3 year, and no later than the end of the R3 year.
  • Early declaration allows sufficient time to meet ABR scheduling, documentation, and rotation requirements.

Why Choose Stanford Pediatric Radiology 15-Month Pathway:

  • Comprehensive pediatric radiology subspecialty exposure
  • Structured, high-yield pediatric didactic curriculum
  • Longitudinal integration of pediatric radiology training during residency
  • Preparation for Pediatric Radiology subspecialty certification under ABR guidelines

ABR Pathway Requirements

Per ABR policy, residents completing the 15-month pathway must fulfill the following:

  • A total of 15 months of pediatric radiology training completed during the four-year Diagnostic Radiology residency
  • The 15 months consist of:
    • 12 months of core pediatric radiology rotations
    • Up to 3 months of pediatric radiology-related rotations
  • Core pediatric radiology rotations must average greater than 80% pediatric cases
  • Research rotations do not count toward the 15-month requirement
  • Training may occur at any time during residency and does not need to be consecutive
  • Training must meet ACGME pediatric radiology clinical experience requirements across modalities (radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and molecular imaging, and interventional procedures)
  • Training must be supervised by a preceptor who holds current ABR subspecialty certification in Pediatric Radiology
  • An ABR application and Sponsoring Department Agreement (SDA) must be submitted at least six months prior to completion of residency
